Gov't needs 400 English teachers

Teachers from the East African Community will be brought in to increase the needed manpower for the 12-year education program, the Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi announced Monday.

The teacher will be for the English language program that the government is enforcing, he said while addressing a joint session of parliament.

On unpaid teacher arrears, the PM said out of the Rwf 4 billion owed, government has already cleared Rwf 2billion, and the rest will be paid by early next year.

With effect from January – start of the school year, all pupils will study through the 9-year-basic-education program, and then continue for another three at no cost. However, there remains a problem of the level of education that the students are getting.

Some parents have preferred to take their children to neighbouring Uganda.
