Kigali-based Green Hills Academy yesterday launched an environmental awareness campaign in the country.The students, together with the school’s administration, organised an awareness-walk from their premises in Nyarutarama to Kimihurura, with placards calling on everyone to get on board and protect the environment. The campaign was jointly conducted with Duha Complex School in Rwamagana and Hackley School in New York, which also carried out the same activities in their respective areas under the theme; “The Role of Education in Transforming Africa”. The activities, which are part of the Environmental Week, is an initiative of the students. Mikel Nsengiyumva, the Head boy of Green Hills Academy, said that they decided to come up with the idea to join other citizens in protecting the environment and help raise awareness among all Rwandans. “We found it necessary as students to be part of the country’s programmes like building peace and security and hygiene. We learnt a lot in as far as protecting the environment and its use, and we want to pass the message to others to also join the campaign and plant trees,” Nsengiyumva said. Gaspard Karenza, the school’s deputy Headmaster, said they would offer environment lessons in the course of the week and form environmental clubs.
