The Government of Rwanda is pleased to
announce that students from countries in the East African Community will be
eligible for scholarships for the programmes of Carnegie Mellon University in
Rwanda. The two initial programmes offered are Professional Development short
courses from February 2012 and the Master of Science in Information Technology
(MSIT) from August 2012.
Scholarships will amount to 50% of the global tuition fee
for the MSIT and to 50% of the enrolment fee for the Professional Development
courses. The tuition fees charged globally by Carnegie Mellon University for
the academic year 2012 / 2013 is estimated at 38,900 USD. This rate will be
confirmed in March 2012. Based on this estimation the scholarship means that
qualifying students would pay 19,450 USD per annum
The scholarships will be offered to students upon
fulfillment of the academic requirements and acceptance to the CMU Rwanda
programmes and completion of an evaluation form for the assessment of the
student’s financial needs by the Ministry of Education.
For Rwandan students there are also loans offered by the
Rwanda Education Board in addition to the scholarship
The CMU-Rwanda education programmes are offered by the
School of Engineering of CMU which is ranked 6th in graduate engineering
education by the 2011 U.S. News and World Report. CMU is the 1st top ranked
U.S. research institution to offer graduate degrees in Africa with an
in-country presence and resident faculty.
Hon. Vincent Biruta, Minister of Education of Rwanda said:
“Rwanda is proud to host Carnegie Mellon University as part of the Regional ICT
Center of Excellence in Rwanda that was announced by H.E. Paul Kagame at CMU in
Pittsburgh last year. These scholarships will give students from the region the
opportunity to enroll in master’s programmes from one of the best universities
in the world right here in Rwanda. They will learn from CMU’s renowned faculty
about solving problems for our country and this region.”
Bruce Krogh, Director of CMU-Rwanda said: “We are very
pleased that the Government of Rwanda is offering these scholarships to support
students from Rwanda and the region where we want to make an impact.”
