Former students of one of Kigali’s popular secondary schools, Lycee
de Kigali (LDK), yesterday converged at the school’s premises, where
they launched an Alumni Association and pledged to support the school.
The
Rugunga based school, that opened in 1974, has produced numerous
prominent businessmen and women as well as senior government officials
including Christopher Bazivamo, a member of the East African
Legislative Assembly and Senator Specioze Ayinkamiye.
“We have
for long wished to bring together our (former) students; and, it is
finally a dream come true,” Martin Masabo, the school’s head teacher
said.
Through the association, the alumni will mentor current
students and contribute towards equipping the school’s laboratories and
libraries.
“I am a chemical engineer by profession. I will
spare time, especially over weekends, to visit and assist students
taking chemistry,” Sam Gahonzire, an old boy, told The New Times.
The alumni will also pool financial resources to help the school expand.
The new school flag and the anthem were launched at the event.
Officiating
at the event, Dr Erasmus Rwanamiza, the Director General of Academic
Planning in the Ministry of Education called on the school
administration to maintain the good academic reputation.
“Lycee
de Kigali is one of the only two schools of Excellence in Nyarugenge
District. We should not allow it to decline,” Rwanamiza said, urging
the alumni to help in monitoring the school progress.
The LDK
Alumni Association was formed and Fidel Rubagumya, a medical student at
the National University of Rwanda was elected Chairman.
