News and Events > Over 1300 graduate from the National University The graduation ceremony  at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), held yesterday, saw 1,347 students conferred with degrees, 62 of whom were awarded Master’s degrees and 23 diplomas from NUR’s School of Public Health and the Great Lakes Media Centre. According to the Rector of the University, Prof. Silas Lwakabamba, the number of graduates has increased over the last four years. Statistics indicate that about 6000 students graduated at NUR since 2006, whereas only 8000 students had graduated from the University since it was founded in 1963. Lwakabamaba noted that the university has also improved in the quality of education. “The National University leads in Rwanda’s quality revolution. Employers have been happy to recruit graduates from NUR and they (graduates) operate with even more confidence than in the past,” the rector said. Lwakabamba pointed out that the University now has improved learning facilities, including a digitalized library and is promoting the use of ICT. “High speed wireless internet connection has been installed at the university,” he said adding that more Masters programs had been introduced in various faculties. The Rector reaffirmed the university’s commitment to contribute to the development of the country by ensuring easy access to higher education countrywide. “We have more presence in Kigali and offer short courses as well as degrees to suit the professional needs of those who are employed,” Lwakabamba said. Dr. Theogene Rutagwenda, the chairperson of the NUR Board of Directors, spoke on behalf of the Chancellor/Minister of Education and commended NUR for its research initiatives among other services. “Research and consultancy have boosted the university’s reputation here and abroad. The university also continues to support the community by providing services, including free legal aid, free counselling and other community outreach projects,” he said.
