SDP embarks on nation-wide sensitization campaign for skills development fund

On Tuesday May 22, 2012, in the afternoon, the Workforce Development Authority (WDA) organized a press conference to inform potential applicants, stakeholders and its esteemed clients from both private and public bodies about the funding availability, guiding principles, process of application for the funds and acquisition processes.
The Skills Development Project (SDP) operates within WDA and is funded by World Bank. It has been involved in a nation-wide sensitization campaign aimed at raising awareness to key relevant communities especially training providers. This campaign concerns the availability of grants to meet skills needs and encourage them to be innovative in the delivery of training programs that match the pressing labor market needs in Rwanda.

INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS – ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD.

The One Laptop per Child Program is a key project that aims at the enhancement of education through the Introduction of Technology in Primary schools. It is also a key component in the creation of a knowledge based economy.
Rwanda launched “the One Laptop per Child” program in September 2008 with a target to have all students from P4 to P6 with access to laptops in public and subside schools only.
To date over 108500 laptops have been deployed in the country and other 110000 are waiting in the stores. This program enables a constructionism / constructivism approach to education which means that children learn by doing and making in a public, guided and collaborative process including feedback from peers, not just from teachers.
The outstanding benefits of the project are among other things schools infrastructure upgraded with electricity and wiring of classes ;
- Installation of E –Solution ; which brings local area network and digital content ;
- Capacity building brought to schools and the communities with basic ICT training, English and E-books
- Basic ICT skills acquired for students ;
- Usage of computers to read and write ;
- Use of multi-media tools and basic programming skills ;
- Learning by doing through interactive lessons and most of all
- Connecting Rwanda children to the world.
In case private schools need these laptops, they buy them from the government of RWANDA through MINEDUC.
